Food processing company sentenced after worker suffers serious arm injuries.

A food processing company named Belwood Foods has been fined after the worker’s arm was drawn into the machinery and caused injury.

What led to the arm injury? 

Mr Piotr Zielinki, 58 years worker from Nottinghamshire Belwood Foods site at Lowmoor business park, Kirk by-in Ashfield, Nottingham, on 22 November 2019.

The worker was removing trapped debris on the hinges of a panel door of a hopper machine. However, opening the panel door makes debris drain out from the auger. While removing the debris, the worker’s arm was drawn into the machine and sustained injury. The injury required surgery.

Health and safety executive report concerning the arm injuries

The HSE UK discovered the company did not put enough controls to prevent the opening of the access panel door when the auger was moving. There were equally no isolation procedures in place.

The fine from the arm injuries

Belwood Foods Limited pleaded guilty to breaching section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work, etc Act,1974. They were fined £20000 and made to pay £71839.21 in costs at Nottingham magistrate court on 9 October 2023.
